Joep Nicolas Oil Painting of Christ Carrying the Cross

A Joep Nicholas (1897 – 1972) oil painting on wood panel of Christ carrying the cross. This piece depicts the Christian biblical scene just before Christ’s crucifixion. Several men are gathered around removing the cross from Christ’s shoulders while a guard stands watch behind him. It is rendered with expressive mark making and a dramatic color palette in hues primarily of reds, whites, and browns. It is signed and dated to the lower left corner ‘Joep Nicolas 1945’. This piece is presented in an open wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.
Condition
- craquelure throughout painting; wear to edges of wood panel; chips and wear to edges of frame.
