A graphite drawing on paper of a character identified as Gwynplain, perhaps meant to be the character from Victor Hugo’s 1869 novel The Man Who Laughs. This carefully-rendered piece depicts the character in a wide-brimmed hat and cape, his arms crossed tightly at his chest. This piece is signed illegibly to its lower left corner and is titled toward the upper right. It is matted under glass in a wooden frame with a wire for hanging to its verso.

- paper is discolored; image area is dirty; smudges graphite residue throughout the paper; wear and scratches to frame.
