A Persian Tabriz area rug. This silk and wool rug is hand-knotted in a palette of deep midnight blue, rose, cream and blush. It begins with a cartouche-shaped medallion grounded in rose and filled with palmettes, leaves, flowers and vines, with pendants at top and bottom. The medallion rests on a contoured midnight blue field, which features twelve birds amid sprays of flowers and foliage. Spandrels are filled with vase forms and florals over rose. Framing the field are compound borders, including a lively herati main border over midnight blue and meandering-carnation minor borders over cream. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with short mesh skirts and ivory cotton warp fringe. It is unlabeled.
