A a collection of sketches and drawings on paper by New York artist Bill Schiffer (Contemporary). This lot includes over fifteen pieces that include preliminary and thumbnail sketches and designs, in-progress works on tracing paper that were transferred to a final work, and more finished designs on graph paper colored in marker that depict arrangements of triangles and checkerboard squares that for Op Art compositions. The pieces are rendered in graphite and ink, and most are signed to a lower corner of the page. The works are presented unmatted and unframed.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
