Antique Classical and Victorian Eastlake Side Chairs with Caned Seats
Item Details
An antique Classical and Victorian Eastlake side chair with caned seats. The Classical example dates to the second quarter of the 19th century. It features a mixed wood, mahogany-stained frame with a tablet crest flanked by rounded ends and trefoil cutouts above a variform splat and a caned seat. It rises on saber legs joined by a box stretcher. Also included is a Victorian Eastlake side chair in walnut dating to the late 19th century. It has an arched, burl-paneled crest over a cartouche-form splat, hip supports, and a caned seat. It is further embellished with a frontal, floral-incised apron and the chair rises on ring-turned, front legs and raking back legs joined by a spindled, box stretcher.

Condition
- Classical chair with some crazing/alligatoring to finish as well as some small chips/nicks and marks; lateral seat rails reinforced with metal brackets where they connect to back legs (one has a couple of resulting cracks); connection between front, left leg and front stretcher is a little loose (needs to be re-glued); a few tiny breaks to caning; Victorian Eastlake chair with minor/expected surface wear throughout; burl veneer on crest with cracking and small losses, some of which have been overlaid with putty and painted; right hip support with a repair and a resulting crack.
