A 1929 gelatin silver print by Francis Bruguiere, (American 1879 – 1945) depicts Manuel Brown and Bruguiere’s lifetime partner, Rosalinde Fuller in the ‘Unknown Warrior’. It is inscribed on the back in pencil. This photo is an example of Bruguiere’s technique of multiple-exposure and abstract reality.
Bruguiere was born in San Francisco, to a family of wealth and social prominence. He studied painting in Europe, returned to California set up an art studio recording photographic images of the city in good times and bad. His images of the aftermath of the great San Francisco earthquake and fires were historical artifacts of the devastation and were recorded in a book called San Francisco In 1918 he moved to New York and worked as a photographer for Vanity Fair, Vogue, and Harper’s Bazaar. During his time as photographer of the New York Theatre Guild, he met his future life partner, the British actress Rosalinde Fuller.
