Bill Schiffer Graphite and Charcoal Drawings
Item Details
Graphite on paper
A selection of graphite and charcoal drawings on loose paper of portraits and figures by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. These twelve drawings include loose and more tightly shaded renderings of people in close portraiture, or in a bust view. Certain drawings rely on smeared charcoal to render value, while others feature clustered linework or thin contour lines to detail its subjects. To the margins are handwritten artist signatures, one of which is dated 1975.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
