A circa 1897 Blüthner Leipzig concert piano. This antique piano features the ‘Aliquot’ stringing that was an innovation by Blüthner around 1864 that takes advantage of a sympathetically vibrating fourth string note to each string. The piano has the Blüthner ‘patent action.’ The piano has the cylindrical soundboard and angle cut hammers that were also unique features of the instrument at the time. The walnut cabinet is in a neo-classical style, featuring marquetry veneer accents to each side with carved gilded borders and gilded floral accents. The fallboard features herringbone wood patterns and the Blüthner logo is surrounded by beautifully inlaid parquetry accents. The music rack features Greek key and open diamond patterns and a carved ‘B’ in ornate script. The fluted legs feature turned rim accents, gilded lobed flower motifs, and stand on bun feet. The lyre post is carved into the shape of its name, with a beautifully carved lyre with floral accents sits atop the petal box that has a soft pedal and a sustain pedal, omitting the sostenuto. The legs are reinforced with beveled and curved stretchers with gilded accents.
