A mixed media painting on board by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer, titled Gas Chamber. This work, which is composed of graphite reinforced with acrylic paint, depicts a locked chamber to the center surrounded by calligraphic text regarding zodiac signs. The painting is mounted to a flat backing and appears to be under protective glazing in a natural wooden frame with hanging wire to the verso.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
