1965 Personal Inscription by Allen Ginsberg to Herbert Marshall

A January 7, 1965 personal inscription by American poet, philosopher and writer, Allen Ginsberg (1926-1997) to Herbert Marshall. It is written in black ink on the title page removed from Ginsberg’s book of poetry, Reality Sandwiches 1953 – 60, published by City Lights Books. The inscription reads, ’ For Mr. H. Marshall on Times Square many years after reading his 1945 translation of Mayakoosky (sic) given to me by poet Frank O’Hara – Jan 7, 1965’. An ink doodle of three fish appear in the upper middle of the page. Frank O’Hara (1926-1966), American poet, writer and art critic was an influence in the art world from his curator post at the Museum of Modern Art in the 1960s and had a key role in the New York counter cultural movement of artists, writers and musicians. Posthumously he was awarded the 1972 National Book Award for Poetry. Ginsburg, a Pulitzer Prize finalist in 1995 received the National Book Award for Poetry in 1974, was known as a leader in both the 1950s era Beat Generation of New York and subsequently the countercultural revolution on the 1960s.

Condition
There is a large black ink spot on the bottom of the page – not sure if it was placed there intentionally or the result of a leaky pen.
