Item Details
A 1916 half leather first French edition of De L’Art Du Théatre by Edward Gordon Craig (1876-1966), published by Nouvelle Revue Francaise, Paris, This is an unnumbered copy of the thousand copies produced for French speakers. Marble cover boards and decorative end papers. Also included are two letters dated 1902 from the Purcell Operatic Society, founded by Craig and Martin Fallas Shaw. Craig was first an actor, than in the late 19th century changed his focus to production and stage design. In the book, which is a dialogue between a theater-goer and a Stage Director, they explore new concepts of stage design, lighting, directing, art and acting elements. The two letters are a plea to a patron for funds and a subscription renewal after his critically successful production of Handel’s Acis and Galatea. And, the lot contains a third letter from Craig to Herbert Marshall dated 1938 in which he refers to his book and a Russian translation. The items within this lot are from the Edward Gordon Craig Archive of Herbert Marshall. This item is a companion to item # 18DCC083-136 in this sale.
