Bill Schiffer 1975 Ink Stamp on Paper Relief Prints

Item Details

By Hand

A collection of six relief prints in the form of ink stamp compositions on paper by New York artist Bill Schiffer (Contemporary). These works use small ink stamps arranged to form larger pieces including a circle, radiating bowtie shapes, and other rounded shapes using a repetition of the stamped word ‘RED’, an American flag using the words ‘RED’, ‘BLUE’, and ‘STAR’, and a field filled with overlapping, textured rectangles. Each is signed and dated to the lower right, with one marked 1976 and the rest 1975. The works are all presented behind white mats and unframed, with labels to the versos.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
