1993 Bill Schiffer Scratchboard

Item Details

Other

A 1993 scratchboard of iconography by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. This work depicts a hammer and sickle gridded off into nine separate compositions, each of which are rendered with various etched linework that has been cross-hatched to indicate value. To the lower left corner is a dated signature.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
