1966 Bill Schiffer Charcoal Drawing
Item Details
Charcoal on paper
A charcoal drawing on cardboard of a surrealist scene by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. This monochromatic drawing depicts an enlarged bust of a clown opening its mouth to yell, as it supports a Christ-like figure laying over top. The composition is rendered with smudged charcoal reinforced with white to create subtle value. To the right center is a handwritten artist signature, dated 1966.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
