An acrylic painting on canvas by artist Bill Schiffer, titled Womb. This psychedelic painting depicts a surrealist composition of nude women melding into one another, surrounded by bulbous, undulating forms that connect together to create a tunnel. To the distance is what appears to be an opening. The composition is rendered in a vectorized fashion featuring salmon pink, magenta and blue tones. This painting is wrapped over a wooden stretcher inscribed with an artist signature to the verso.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
