1980 Bill Schiffer Watercolor Painting

Item Details

A 1980 watercolor painting on paper by contemporary New York artist Bill Schiffer. This Expressionist style painting depicts a clustered web of swirling black strokes, which bunch up at the center. It is reinforced by spattered pigment, with each curved stroke accented by a splotch of paint at the very tip. To the lower right corner is a dated, handwritten artist signature. The painting is presented mounted to a white backing under protective glazing, which is placed in a stained wooden frame with hanging wire and a handwritten tag to the verso.

Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980’s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
