A cut paper collage on paper titled Midtown 11:45 AM by American artist Bill Schiffer (20th-century), created in 1984. The piece depicts black-and-white cut paper figures clashing head-to-head against an abstract red, white, black and blue background. The work is signed and dated in pencil to the lower right with the artist’s name, work title and medium noted on a label adhered to the frame verso. The piece is set against a white backing and presented under glass in a cream wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.
Born in New York, Bill Schiffer rose to prominence as a painter and sculptor in the early 1980s. Though he still works in many two dimensional and three dimensional art mediums, Schiffer is most well known for his unique handcrafted jewelry, which he started designing after a foray experimenting with wearable art in the fashion scene. Bill Schiffer’s art and jewelry has been shown in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Musee des Arts Decoratifs in Paris, as well as major museums in Italy, Japan, Germany and the United States. His work has been featured in publications including Vogue, Elle, Bazaar, Women’s Wear Daily, Seventeen and Cosmopolitan.
