Dorothy Dunitz Porcelain and Stoneware Plates
Item Details
A collection of three stoneware and porcelain handbuilt plates by Michigan ceramicist Dorothy Dunitz. The first is a round, shallow platter, having a hunter green to turquoise abstract high gloss glaze; the glaze shows depth and texture while being smooth to the touch. A note to the verso appears to be a glazing note. A second plate/plaque has a muted, variegated honey amber to green high gloss glaze on a white stoneware body, also having what appears to be a glazing note to the underside. Also included is a rectangular, ‘black’ stoneware clay, left in its bisque form with an opaque, creamy white abstract high-fired glaze pattern. All three are signed by the artist to the underside.
Dorothy Dunitz (American, 1919-2016) was a well known Franklin, Michigan ceramicist, known for her abstract plate and plaque forms in porcelain, typically using a variety of textures and muted, earth toned glazes. Several of her pieces are held by the Detroit Institute of Art.
