John A. Ruthven Signed Limited Edition Offset Lithograph "The Great Auk"
Item Details
A signed limited edition offset lithograph by beloved wildlife artist John A. Ruthven (born 1924) titled The Great Auk. This print depicts a brave great auk, preparing to hop into the frigid water to hunt for food. Behind them, rows of comrades watch on from a cliffside as other birds fly freely in the distance. The great auk was the first bird to be declared extinct in Colonial America, officially declared as such in the mid-19th century. Though they closely resembled penguins, the two birds are not directly related. This print is numbered 7/200 in pencil to lower left and is signed in pencil as well as in-plate to lower right. The print is presented under glass in a prominent gold finished gesso and wood frame, ready to hang. The back is papered and includes Ruthven and print information on vellum.
