A contemporary oil painting on canvas by listed British artist Michael Matthews (born 1933) titled The Port of Whampoa. The expansive landscape piece depicts a 19th-century Chinese port scene, with figures walking on green fields against a backdrop of large clipper ships, blue waters and distant cliffs. The work is signed ‘Michael Matthews’ in red paint to the lower right, with a Chinese character painted in red to the lower left. It is presented without glass in a mottled green and gold tone wooden frame fitted with hanging wire to the verso.

- craquelure to composition at upper left; mild discoloration to image; minor edge wear to frame; no backing paper present.
