1940s Original Signed Abstract Expressionistic Oil on Canvas

An original signed oil on canvas. The Abstract Expressionistic work depicts an urban streetscape at night, with a sense of foreboding and mystery given to the cast of characters seen strolling under the glow of the gaslights. A couple in wide-brimmed hats walk arm-in-arm past the corner hotel towards a curving red and white awning at the opposite corner, while to the foreground a man smiling a cigarette walks away from the scene. The painting is rendered in rich shades of blue, umber and dark green with a glowing quality of light cast by the street lamps and approaching darkening evening sky. The work is signed with the artist’s monogram to the lower right corner and presented in a narrow silver-painted wooden frame. Wired to the verso for wall hanging.
