1984 Viktor Koretsky & Vladimir SokolovRussian Cold War Poster
Item Details
A 1984 Russian Cold War poster designed by Viktor Koretsky and Vladimir Sokolov. Both of the artists had been indoctrinated by Socialism and regarded as two of the greatest Soviet propaganda artists. The poster is an anti-American statement against the use of chemical weapons, with a depiction of chemist wearing a red and white striped hard hat and gas mask with ‘USA’ in bold black text to the hard hat, with dollar signs serving as eyes, pouring a vial of poison into a glass flask placed in front of an ominous pile of skulls. To the top is a title in Russian that emphatically states ‘No to Chemical Weapons’ in black text. This image was created in response to Ronald Reagan’s push to reactivate the manufacturing of chemical weapons which had not been used since the war in Vietnam. The propaganda poster served to dehumanize the United States, revealing the hypocrisy with which the United States disregarded the Nuremberg Laws about chemical warfare.
