A Sino-Tibetan brass figure of Green Tārā (Śyāmatārā), the “mother of liberation” and Buddha of enlightened activity. Tārā has five main forms of different color and is believed to protect her devotees from the many dangers that beset mankind. Here Green Tārā, in the Khadiravanī manifestation, is seated upon a lotus throne in the lalitāsana pose with her right leg pendant and supported by a lotus. Her right hand is held in the varada mudrā, the gesture of generosity and charity, and her left hand is raised the vitarka mudrā, the gesture of discussion. She holds the stems of utpala (blue lotus flowers) which are in full bloom at her shoulders. She is dressed in the delicate ornaments, detailed clothing, and the crown of a bodhisattva. The underside is marked with raised geometric patterns, but is otherwise unmarked.
