1891 Kurz & Allison Civil War Chromolithograph "Assault on Fort Sanders"

Item Details

An 1891 Kurz & Allison chromolithograph of a Civil War battle titled Assault on Fort Sanders. The piece depicts an important Union victory, between Confederate General James Longstreet and Union General Ambrose Burnside and the Army of the Ohio, on November 29, 1863 in Eastern Tennessee near Knoxville. The chromolithograph shows the opposing forces in the height of the battle, a particularly cruel one fought in freezing rain and with the additional vexation of strung telegraph wires to foil Confederate advances against the Union earthwork bastion, along with a deep and slippery ditch. This Confederate defeat, plus the loss of the Battle of Chattanooga on November 25, put much of East Tennessee in the Union camp. The print is presented under glass in a light wood frame, wired to the back for wall hanging. Kurt & Allison were a Chicago publisher of chromolithographs in the 1800s, specializing in prints of Civil War battles.
