An 1895 Benjamin Curtis Porter (American, 1843 – 1908) oil on canvas society portrait. The portrait depicts a stoic older woman, dressed in black velvet and lace, standing against a alizarin crimson background. The work displays a painted signature and date, ‘B.C. Porter 1895’. The painting is presented in a gold tone wooden frame with decorative floral and foliate molding throughout. Hanging wire on verso. Benjamin Curtis Porter was an American portrait painter. He was educated at Harvard before continuing his education abroad and establishing studios in Boston and New York. Porter was a member of high society, painting portraits for Emily Thorn Vanderbilt and Maria Louisa Kissam Vanderbilt. Porter’s Vanderbilt Portraits currently reside at the Biltmore Estate.

- a few scratches to surface of painting

- corners of frame slightly parting
