Oil Painting on Academy Board Attributed to Arthur Helwig

Item Details

An original oil painting on academy board attributed to well-listed Cincinnati artist Arthur Louis Helwig (1899-1976). The expressionistic painting depicts an exuberant arrangement of flowers in a vase. It is rendered in lively brushstrokes, some in thick impasto, of bright, vibrant hues, and is sent against a bright yellow background activated by scattered short strokes of green and orange. The work is unsigned, and is inscribed to the verso ‘Painted by Arthur Helwig at the Cincinnati Woman’s Club, December 1963’. A picture of the artist and several newspaper clippings about the artist in an envelop are attached to the verso. The work is housed in a wood frame with a distressed finish, and is ready to hang with a wire.

Helwig was an active artist for over four decades and an instructor at the Cincinnati Art Academy. During this period he exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe and across the United States. He was president of the Cincinnati Art Club from 1939 to 1941. Helwig studied under Theodore Dorl, Bessie Hoover Wessel and James Hopkins. He worked in watercolor, oils, and numerous printing methods and was also a well-known mural painter. His works are housed at The Cincinnati Art Museum, Chicago Art Institute, The Philadelphia Museum and The Cleveland Art Museum.
