Item Details

A 1994 House of Lloyd match girl doll. This plastic doll depicts an English match girl. She is dressed in stitched and dirty clothes and wears no shoes. She has a small crate with boxes of matches inside hanging around her neck. In Victorian London, match girls became famous for selling individual matches by poor girls in order to gain any money whatsoever. Match girls also worked in match factories and went on an infamous strike in 1888 due to poor work conditions. Hans Christian Anderson wrote a popular short story inspired by the now well-known match girls of England.
