An oil painting on canvas of an autumnal landscape by well-listed American artist George Herbert Baker (1878-1943). Portrayed with large loose brushstrokes and textural impasto, this impressionistic work features an autumnal landscape with multi-colored leaves throughout the trees and a dilapidated wood structure in the center. The painting is signed ‘G.H. Baker’ to the lower left. It is presented in an Arts & Crafts style gold-tone wood frame.
Born in Muncie, Indiana, George Herbert Baker studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and was known for his impressionist landscapes. He was a prominent member of the ‘Richmond Group’ of painters, among other celebrated Midwestern artists such as Albert Clinton Conner, Lawrence McConaha, and Micajah Thomas Nordyke. Baker’s work has been exhibited at the Richmond Art Museum, the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among other institutions.
