Item Details
Unsigned
An early 19th century Latin American retablo paper assemblage. The devotional folk art piece depicts the Crucifixion scene with Jesus on the cross, his tortured body shown in a gray cut-out lithographic paper piece with applied gilded crown of thorns and woven belt, with real human hair flowing down to both sides of his form, and gilded florets as nails to his hands and feet. A tapestry skirt is accents with metallic fringe and a silver metal figural token. Two lithographic angels stand guard on ‘marble’ pedestals to the each side of his feet, with a draped curtain of brown paper with gold foil fringe framing the scene to the top, accented with silver metal milagros and gold foil angels. The entire assemblage is composed upon a brown paper background. The retablo is presented under glass in an antique beveled medium tone wooden frame. The piece has a hanging loop to the top of the back.
