Sam Gilliam Original Signed Monotype "Fog in The Hollow"

Item Details

By Hand

An original signed monotype titled A Fog in the Hollow by well listed Color Field artist Sam Gilliam (American, 1933- ). The abstract non-figurative monotype is representative of Gilliam’s work, with an overall quilted effect achieved through the use of repetitive shapes and color. The monotype has a light blue background with massed stenciled circle forms in shades of lime green, pink, yellow, white and azure blue, with explosions of color and a tire tread “ghost” in white to the center. The monotype is dated and pencil-signed to the lower right corner and titled to the lower left. The work is displayed under glass, with the painting floated upon a white board and finished in a black metal frame.
Sam Gilliam, born in Kentucky, studied painting at University of Louisville, and received a Doctorate of Humane Letters at both the University of Louisville and Northwestern University. In the 1960s he joined the Washington Color Painters, with an interest in applying poured acrylic color to unprimed canvas. His work evolved to draped canvases and collages, transforming into three-dimensional works utilizing aluminum geometric forms brushed with vibrant color and arranged in complex compositions. His work is widely exhibited and collected internationally, with major exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Museum of African Art and MoMA. Additional information about the painter is included in the enclosed link.
