19th Century Chinese Porcelain Jardiniere

An antique Chinese porcelain jardiniere . This piece features a finely painted underglaze pattern rendered in cobalt. It is composed with a wide, flat lip decorated with fretwork band and alternating reserves with floral and landscape vignettes. It descends on a globular body decorated with a botanical motif, including a peacock. The piece is accented with a pair of applied guardian lion handles. They are rendered with a snail-shell mane, a characteristically Buddhist motif. The piece rests on a footed base finished with geometric trim. The piece has been restored with staples as well as a reconstructed handle. It is dated to the early 19th century.

- various discoloration, marks, scratches, and chips throughout; large chips to both handles; multiple cracks across lip and body repaired with staples.
