Josef Albers Limited Edition Serigraph Print on Paper "I-S j"

Item Details

By Hand

A signed limited edition serigraph print titled I-S j by well listed American geometric artist Josef Albers (1888-1976). This minimalist print features a series of four nested concentric squares, ranging in colors from green at the smallest to black at the largest. The spacing of the squares it weighted to the bottom, giving the composition the illusion of a horizon line. The work is titled and signed ‘A ’73’ in the lower margin, and hand numbered 9 in a series of 100. It is presented under glass with a white mat in a silver tone wood frame. There is a hanging wire mounted to the verso.

Josef Albers was trained as an art teacher at Königliche Kunstschule in Berlin, Germany. He started to work as a print maker at the Kunstgewerbschule in Essen after he graduated from 1916-1919. During 1920 Albers studied painting at Weimar Bauhaus and joined the faculty in 1922 as maker of stained glass. Not long after in 1925 he was promoted to professor and taught along side artists Wassily Kandinsky and Paul Klee. Ablers and his family left Germany during 1933 and emigrated to the United States. He was offered a job as the head of Black Mountain College, in North Carolina. During 1950 Albers left Black Mountain College to become head of the design department as Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut. While there he expanded their graphic design program, then called graphic arts. It was during his time at Yale University he became well-known for his abstract paintings and theories on composition. His most famous works was a series of prints and paintings titled Homage to the Square. Albers work has been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; and the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich to name a few. Several of his works are housed in private and public collects around the world.
