Toyohara Kunichika Woodblock Print on Paper of the Kabuki Actor Nakamura Shikan

An ukiyo-e woodblock print on paper by listed Japanese artist Toyohara Kunichika (豊原 国周, 1835-1900), created circa 1875. This print features the Kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan (中村芝翫) as the warrior Ōkubo Hikozaemon (大久保 彦左衛門, 1560-1639), also known as Ōkubo Tadataka (大久保 忠教). The actor’s name is printed with in a pale blue cartouche alongside his role and the artist’s ‘Toyohara Kunichika hitsu’ printed signature. A circular black seal dates the print to June 1876 (Meiji 9). This work is presented mounted on wood and housed in a wooden frame under glass.
