Utagawa Kunisada Woodblock Print of the Kabuki Actor Bando Hikosaburo

A ukiyo-e woodblock print by the Japanese master Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞, 1786-1865). The print depicts the Kabuki actor Bandō Hikosaburō (坂東彦三郎, generation unknown) as the Lady Iwafuji (局岩藤). The actor wears an elaborate kimono and holds a shoe above his head. The actor’s name and his role are printed in the upper right corner. The artist’s ‘ki-ō Toyokuni ga’ (喜翁豊国) signature is printed alongside a Yamaguchi-ya Tōbei publisher seal, a Horikō Iwa blockcutter seal, and a kiwame censor seal in the lower right corner. Piece is presented matted under glass in a wooden frame with a wire hanger to the verso.
