A Japanese woodblock print on paper of a female figure by Utagawa Kunisada (歌川 国貞, 1786–1865) also known as Utagawa Toyokuni III (三代歌川豊国). The work depicts a female figure with a lantern. Her neck in a ‘hunchback’ arch was a beauty standard at the time that Toyokuni III was famous for portraying in his many prints. The artist’s printed signature is present along the left edge alongside a censor seal. To the verso, the artist name is printed on a gallery label. The work is presented under glass in a tarnished silver-toned wooden frame.
Condition
- some chips and wear to the edges of the frame; glass could benefit from a cleaning; some wear to the edges of the paper; some foxing to the surface of the paper; to the verso, some graphite marks.
