Mid 20th-Century Japanese Calligraphy on Rice Paper

Item Details

A Japanese ink calligraphy work on rice paper, dated to 1957. To the verso is an inscription providing the translation for ‘equality’ (平等 byōdō), the name of the calligrapher, the temple, and date. The piece was created in Takarazuka, Hyogo Prefecture in Japan. Marked with a pair of red seals to the upper right and lower left corners. Housed in a wood frame with a bamboo motif, under acrylic glass and off-white matting.

Condition

- to fair; minor wear to the finish on the frame; overall discoloration to the paper and matting; wear to the paper backing including obscuring to the inscription and insect damage to the backing paper.
