Antique Japanese Katagami ((型紙) Fabric Dyeing Stencil
Item Details
An antique Japanese katagami (型紙) stencil for dyeing kimono fabric. The finely cut paper stencil is executed on white and indigo blue paper, overlaid upon a chocolate brown rice paper. The piece is composed of two white triangles extending horizontally across the work, with images of dancing geishas, the top image in a reversed position to the lower one. Surrounding the triangles is the indigo paper with intricately-cut celestial patterning and floating lanterns, some with Japanese characters. The work is titled in black ink to the lower margin of the brown background, with Japanese signatures and writing to both the left and the right margins. The piece is displayed under glass in a white mat and narrow beveled wooden frame. Wired to the back for hanging.
