A hand-knotted Persian Mashhad area rug. This wool area rug features an elaborate arabesque motif in indigo, cream, golden yellow, powder blue and maroon against a vibrant red ground. It has a central medallion surrounded by scrolling vines, palms and acanthus; flanked by powder blue spandrels to each corner. The field is surrounded by a wide compound border featuring checked, running water and carnation meander guard stripes; with a herati main border. It has white cotton warp fringe to each end and a red selvedge edge. A tag attached to the back is marked ‘F: NO:298’.
