Central Asian Handmade "Suzani" Embroidered Textile

An embroidered textile in the suzani style. Suzani is a type of colorful, embroidered textile native to Central Asian countries including Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and more. This piece is hand-stitched with cotton threads on a cotton cloth ground and use both chain and satin stitches, as well as variations and couching, to create the designs. The piece features a grid of circular, floral medallions in a palette of white, scarlet, emerald, pale yellow, violet, and pink on a black ground, with small flowers filling the spaces between them and along the border. A machine-stitched border is applied to finish the work, with loops along one side for hanging. This piece has the number ‘25’ stitched to one edge, along with a possible signature.
