Vintage Newspapers from Moon Walk and V-J Day

Item Details

A pair of vintage newspapers. This lot features an August 14, 1945 Extra edition of the Washington D.C. Evening Star bearing the headline ‘White House Announces The War Is Over’ over a photo of Gen. Douglas MacArthur and a subhead ‘MacArthur to Receive Surrender of Japanese’. Evening newspapers such as this broke the headline as the agreement came at 7:00 pm Eastern time; the Japanese would later formally surrender aboard the USS Missouri slightly less than three weeks later, on September 2 of that year. Also included is the Monday, July 21, 1969 Late City Edition of The New York Times with the headline ‘Men Walk on Moon: Astronauts Land on Plain; Collect Rocks, Plant Flag.’ The cover also features three photos of the moon landing along with two articles and a commemorative poem.
