An 1887 Donaldson Art Sign of Covington, Kentucky chromolithograph titled Midnight Race on the Mississippi. The print depicts the famous race between the rival steamboats the Robert E. Lee and the _Natchez which occurred during June 30, 1870 on a route from New Orleans to Cairo. The winner was the Robert E. Lee, which was built in Cincinnati, and the race took three days, 1 hour 16 minutes, delayed by fog by 2.5 hours. The atmospherically-charged scene is set at midnight with a full moon glowing in a clouded-filled sky, reflecting off the dark waters of the Mississippi. The print is signed to print to the lower right corner with the Donaldson Sign name and titled to the center on a small brass plaque. The piece is displayed under glass in a cream mat and an antique beveled wood frame. Wired to the back for hanging.
