A hand-knotted Romanian long rug. This wool rug is rendered in a jewel-toned palette of sapphire, ruby, topaz and goldenrod. It features a Persian-inspired design beginning with three oblong ruby medallions, each seeded with a sapphire star. The medallions are enclosed in large sapphire diamonds amid smaller topaz diamonds, each element filled with palmettes, flowers, foliage and vinework. Framing the field are eight borders, including a herati main border featuring flowers and split leaves over ruby. Selvedges are overcast, the rug finishing at each end with short cotton warp fringe. Light blue weft threads are visible on the underside. A label includes numerical codes but no maker’s information.
