Wood and Metal Handled Seals and Sticks of Wax
Item Details
A group of eight wood and metal handled seals and three boxes holding sticks of wax. Included are two seals with baluster shaped dark stained wood handles; one bearing the monogram ‘AHA’ in the center encircled by a Latin phrase in block lettering ’ Ardua Per Præceps Gloria Vadit Iter’, the other having calligraphic initials which appears to read ‘RT’ or similar. Among the gold tone metal handled seals are two with cherub motif handles, one bears the initials ‘LE’ or similar in ornate scrolled font, the other is worn beyond recognition; two seals feature figural creatures with spiked headdresses, one bears the initial ‘B’, the other bears the initial ‘L’; and one seal with a baluster shaped handle bears a Scottish thistle logo. The final piece, a copper tone figure with a concentric-ring ‘Atlantis Cross’ style handle appears to be decorative or devotional, having no noticeable design on the underside. Also included with these seals are three boxes of wax: one labeled Purple Bronze No. 298, one labeled Green Bronze No. 395, and one labeled Lt. Verdure Green No. 345.
Condition
- one cherub seal shows pitting and signs of corrosion, gilt finish is flaking. The seal on the underside is corroded beyond recognition. Bullseye seal has white residue in the crevices. All other seals show varying amounts of tarnish and wear to gilt finish.
