Offset Lithograph After E. G. Renesch of WWI African American Soldiers

Item Details

Not Signed

An offset lithograph poster on paper after American illustrator Edward George Renesch (born 1879). This piece, titled Colored Man is no Slacker, depicts a propaganda poster from World War I in 1918 that aims to dissuade African American men from dodging the draft. It depicts a couple, with the man in uniform, saying their goodbyes as a regiment of African American soldiers march down the street behind them. The bright red, white, and blue of the American flag stands out from the otherwise neutral-toned poster. The titular phrase is printed below the couple’s feet, and the piece is presented in a wooden frame.
