An original 2014 oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015), from her Number Series. The abstract painting features a large number ‘5’, created in simple broad black lines, as its central focus. It is surrounded by a grid of geometric shapes in a variety of green hues. Two rays, one blue and one green, travel the length of the composition, utilizing perspective to create a sense of depth. Numbers held specific meanings for the artist, and according to Mathews the number five represents ‘new harmony’. The work is unsigned and it is dated and marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate to the verso. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed, ready to hang. A printed artist statement and a list of numbers and their symbolic meanings in Mathew’s art are attached to the verso.

Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
