Carol J. Mathews Original Abstract Oil Painting on Canvas of the Number "4"

Item Details

An original oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015), from her Number Series. The abstract painting features a large number ‘4’ created in simple straight lines, reaching to all four edges of the canvas. It is surrounded by brightly colored geometric shapes, areas of which utilize perspective to create a sense of space. Circles in white and violet float across the composition. Numbers held specific meanings for the artist, and according to Mathews the number four represents ‘focus, fore, for’ as well as that she was the fourth child in her family. The work is unsigned, and is marked to the verso with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed, ready to hang. A printed artist statement and a list of numbers and their symbolic meanings in Mathew’s art are attached to the verso.

Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
