An original oil painting on canvas by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). The abstract painting features a series of lines created from broad brushstrokes, in various shades of blue, traversing horizontally across the canvas. Together the strokes create a large rectangle that floats above a flat black background. The work is unsigned, and is marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate. The gallery wrapped canvas is presented unframed, ready to hang. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind . . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
