Carol J. Mathews Pair of Drawings of Surrealist Faces
Item Details
Colored Pencil and Pastel
A pair of drawings in colored pencil and pastel of Surrealist faces by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015). This pair of drawings depict otherworldly faces in Mathews’ signature style including a full spectrum palette and curvilinear linework. The pastel drawing depicts a haunting black-eyed face with strong colorful outlining lending a graphic quality to the piece. The second image depicts just the features of a distorted and expressively colored face with hooded lids and an open mouth. These two drawings are unframed and await your choice of presentation. The verso of each drawing includes a stamp from the estate of Carol J. Mathews.
Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows, . . .having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind. . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
