An original painting on pressed board by Contemporary American artist Carol J. Mathews (1956-2015), from her Flora and Fauna series. The painting features a large abstract floral motif rendered in bold painterly strokes of vibrant hues. It is set against a fiery red background. The work is unsigned, and is marked with a stamp from the artist’s estate to the verso. The panel is presented unframed, ready to hang with a sawtooth bracket. A printed artist statement is attached to the verso.

Mathews, known for her colorful and expressive paintings and drawings, describes her work as follows . . . having painted for over 25 years, it is difficult to describe my art but whimsical, abstract, and fantasy come to mind. . . After years of suffering from mental illness, Carol’s art became a crucial conduit for her internal turmoil. A portion of the proceeds from this sale will go to NAMI, the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
