An engraving on paper titled Dante & Beatrice and engraved by N. Leconte after a painting by Ary Scheffer (Dutch-French, 1759-1858). This piece depicts the writer Dante Alighieri in dark robes, looking up at the woman he loved, Beatrice, as she stands above him on a rock, wearing a white dress and laurel crown, and bathed in light and looking at the sky. The print has the artists’ names printed in the lower corners, as well as the title and publication information to the lower center. The piece is presented behind an arched mat with gold tone fillet and glass in a thin gold tone frame with corner cartouche molding and wire to the verso for hanging.
Condition
- cracks in all four corners of mat; scuffs and debris beneath glass; foxing and discoloration on print; wear to paint on frame; cracks in gesso decorations on frame.
